Stuck in the Middle

My friend Marty contended that Marie is the generic middle name of the American female. It's certainly one of them, I agreed, but there are others. Ann, for instance. Sue. Mae. Jo. Lee. Some parents put all their effort into the first name and have nothing left for the middle.

Over the weekend, just for the hell of it, I gave the dogs middle names: Sparkle Ann and Devo Marie.

In my mind, Sparkle's middle name is clearly Gwendolyn. I'm not sure why.

Seriously, there seem to be millions of middle names for guys and like 5 for women. Or maybe it was just Catholic school that gave me a skewed perspective.

You forgot Jean, which is high among the 5 that also include Ann and Marie. Unfortunately my mother-in-law was Anne Marie, so while Dora has a lovely middle name I worried over, Helen got Marie (another cousin already had Anne). I have a friend whose middle name is Bernadette, which causes me to giggle every time I think of it.

Jean -- yes! It slipped out of my addled head somewhere between conception and execution. Thank you.

Alas, I have to say my sister and I meet both those criteria (Colleen Anne, Shannon Marie). The Catholics have no other option as I don't think you can be legally baptized without at least one of those names--you get "purgatory points" if the name is Anne Marie.
