No Takers

This is all I need for Christmas.

For a brief period in childhood, I had an obsessive fear that I'd be kidnapped. At some point I watched a TV movie about Patty Hearst that made quite an impression, but I think this predated it.

My mother did not share my concern. "Who would want to kidnap you?" she said.

To this day, I'm not sure whether she was stressing the first word or the last, and therefore whether I was being comforted or mocked.

I'm not even as mean as your mom sounds. Wow. Anyway, Helen must have seen a similar film b/c she asks us nightly about stealers coming in to take her or things in the house and we must confirm all doors have been locked etc. Her new fear though, is of Chuck E. Cheese. While most parents are afraid of him, kids aren't but one of her classmates told her he kills children. Apparently Chuck E. has been confused with Chuckie.

I'm terrified of Chuck E. Cheese -- not the character so much as his establishments.

I feel the need to defend myself against my son's calumnies. I'm never quite sure whether I said something vaguely similar but much less ominous than he reports...or whether he has made it up out of whole cloth.

The quote is verbatim. Both commenters seem to have skipped over the first possibility offered.

I love that Prunella is forced to defend herself in anonymous cyberspace. I would have kidnapped you since you were so darn cute and then infect you with Stockholm Syndrome so you would want to stay with me...
